Games for Windows – LIVE is now completely free and does not require a subscription. When you sign up for Games for Windows – LIVE, you're technically signing up for a LIVE Silver membership with free PC multiplayer gameplay.
Games for Windows – LIVE lets you:

- Participate in private and in-game voice chat with other players.
- Send and receive text and voice messages.
- Earn achievements.
- Receive free, automatic LIVE service and game updates.
- Use TrueSkill™ matchmaking to find opponents with similar skills, personalities, and gaming tastes.
- View a list of multiplayer games and join them.
- Host a dedicated server for multiplayer game sessions with other LIVE members.
- Play on a dedicated server.
- Experience peer-to-peer multiplayer gameplay.
- Receive and submit enhanced gamer feedback.
- Get automatic downloads of custom maps (when available).
If you have an Xbox LIVE Gold or Silver Membership, you already have a LIVE membership. Just sign in to Games for Windows – LIVE with the Windows Live ID associated with your existing Xbox LIVE gamertag.
While your Silver membership gets you free online multiplayer on your PC, you may want to go Gold if you also want to play multiplayer games on an Xbox 360 console.
